The Parliamentary Voting System and Constituencies Bill has its second reading in the House of Commons this afternoon. The Bill contains a proposal for a referendum to change the voting system to the Alternative Vote, as well as partisan proposals to change the electoral boundaries.
Not only will these changes leave Britain under represented when compared to other European countries, over 3.5m eligible voters will be missing from the boundary calculations.
The Bill is likely to give rise to bizarre constituency shapes across the country which will disregard history, geography and local identity. It could even lead to constituencies being split across the river Mersey.
I appeared on Newsnight a few weeks ago debating the issues surrounding this bill, if you didn’t catch it you can still watch it here.
