Helping businesses and young adults tackle underage smoking and drinking

This week I helped support a major campaign in Liverpool Wavertree to prevent sales of alcohol and tobacco to children

The “No ID, No Sale” campaign ensures that only adults can buy lottery, alcohol and other age restricted goods, and I was pleased to back the campaign along with local newsagent Laxman Ramas outside Stoneycroft News on Derby Lane.

The campaign encourages young people to apply for CitizenCards to prove their age – and any young adult in Wavertree constituency can contact me, and I will be able to help them obtain a CitizenCard for free.

Approved proof of age schemes like CitizenCard not only make sure that young adults are able to prove their age quickly and easily, they also help the vast majority of responsible retailers in my constituency do their job too. Businesses I speak to have no desire to sell products like alcohol and cigarettes to children, and these cards give assurances to shop owners, customers, and the wider community that age restricted products are only supplied to those old enough to buy them.

Tackling underage sales is also a vitally important tool in reducing problems of anti social behaviour and poor health that can be caused by young people drinking and smoking – resulting in healthier lives and communities for us all.

I’m urging all young adults in Wavertree to obtain “approved” ID like CitizenCard so we can support young people in behaving responsibly, and help shops and businesses play their part too.

Already 745 people in the constituency have got a card – let me know if you need one, and let’s try and get to 1000 very soon!
