Cancer Strategy

Organisations like Macmillan and its World’s Biggest Coffee Morning do valuable work to raise awareness and provide support to people living through cancer.

The Cancer Strategy, published by the independent NHS England Cancer Taskforce in 2015, contains proposals that could go a long way towards helping some of the estimated 2.5 million people living with cancer.

The strategy sets out a priority to transform the approach to supporting people living with and beyond cancer. Its aim is that by 2020 every person with cancer will have access to a Recovery Package – a combination of different interventions, which when delivered together can greatly improve the outcomes and coordination of care.

Macmillan has welcomed the Recovery Package and has called on the government to implement the recommendations in the Cancer Strategy.

At the General Election I stood on a manifesto that pledged to deliver the Cancer Strategy for England in full by 2020. The government has now accepted all 96 recommendations of the strategy and implementation is being led by NHS England’s National Cancer Transformation Board.

I will follow the implementation of the strategy closely and continue to press the government to do more to improve cancer services for patients after treatment.
