Joblessness rises again

Figures out today show that unemployment has risen again and now stands at 2.64 million or 8.3%. This is the highest level since 1994. Youth unemployment has risen too. It’s now a horrifying 1.027 million – the highest since records began in 1992.

These figures make grim reading and I know there are many people out there [...]

Beware of payday loans: the APR is sky-high

Payday loans are designed to tide borrowers over until their next pay cheque. The money is usually provided quickly and designed to be paid back quickly.

Payday loans incur enormous rates of interest. The interest rates are eye watering with one company charging an APR of 3,113% while Wonga, the highest profile payday lender in the UK, [...]

Visit to Liverpool Cancer Research UK Centre

Last Friday I visited the Liverpool Cancer Research UK Centre. It was great to see for myself the fantastic work that is being done there by so many dedicated researchers.

Several organisations, including the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation and the British Lung Foundation work alongside Cancer Research UK at the centre.

Here in Liverpool we have above average [...]

Worrying increase in ‘Honour’ crimes

Over the weekend I read disturbing news coverage about honour crimes and violence in the UK. The reports were shocking.

So called ” honour crimes” are crimes committed against women by their own families or communities. The violence can include threats, abduction, acid attacks, beatings, forced marriage, mutilation and murder.

Figures obtained by the Iranian and Kurdish Women’s [...]

Campaigning for women’s rights in Afghanistan

I joined a cross-party group of MPs and peers to campaign on women’s rights in Afghanistan in front of hundreds of handmade kites, designed by campaigners from around the country, to show our support for women’s rights in Afghanistan.

The campaign led by ActionAid, Amnesty International, CARE UK, GAPS, Womankind Worldwide and Women for Women International – [...]

Labour’s Friends of the Forces

Last week, I took part in the launch of Labour’s Friends of the Forces.

Labour has a strong history and close ties with our Armed Forces. Jim Callaghan served in the Royal Navy before he was Prime Minister and Dennis Healey was in the Army before he served as Chancellor. There are many others today who have [...]

Cameron’s NHS plans will cost Liverpool over £38million

Labour has today revealed the hidden cost of the Government’s wasteful NHS reorganisation in Liverpool. New guidelines will force the local NHS to put aside £38,867,033 from their budget this year and next to pay for a costly NHS restructure that David Cameron repeatedly ruled out.

These shocking new figures show the Government’s reorganisation is costing the [...]

Ed Miliband’s statement on today’s strike action

Ed Miliband, leader of the Labour Party today said:

“I’ve got huge sympathy for those people whose lives are going to be disrupted today, parents who can’t take their kids to school and are going to have to look after them.

But I’m not going to condemn the dinner ladies, nurses, teachers who’ve made the decision to go [...]

Government must change course on economy

George Osborne delivered his Autumn statement today to tell MPs what the Government plans to do to get the economy going and the deficit down.

It has been clear for some time that the Government is cutting too far too fast. Their unrealistic aim to reduce the deficit over just five years is strangling growth and putting [...]
