I continue to share constituents’ concerns that the proposed takeover of Sky by 21st Century Fox threatens media plurality and would concentrate an even larger amount of media to the Murdoch Family Trust. Now that Parliament is in recess, there are additional concerns that the Secretary of State for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport may seek to come to a decision on the takeover without further reference to MPs. This would be wrong.

In June, the Secretary of State announced that she was minded to refer the proposal to the Competition and Markets Authority to conduct a further examination of the deal on the grounds of media plurality. I believe it is vital that the bid be referred to a phase two investigation on grounds of media plurality and  there must be an investigation on broadcasting standards grounds.  Parliament must be given the opportunity to scrutinise any decision that is made.
